An LED or a light-emitting diode is a semiconductor source of light that works in a way that when the electric current flows through it, it emits light. These are commonly known as LEDs. These are known to play a vital role in modern times as they are widely used nowadays and perform various jobs in multiple ways. Nowadays, we see the use of LEDs in applications like LED lights, LED displays, and LED-based traffic lights. However, they are further divided into a variety of types and applications.
Types of LEDs
Based on the chip packaging of the LEDs, we see that these LEDs are classified into various groups, including COB, SMD, MCOB, and MCCOB.
SMD stands for surface-mounted diodes; these are standalone chips placed over a ceramic base. They can also be used as white LED lamps and light strips. They are commonly used in various industrial applications, such as street lights, flood lights, and linear lights. In the case of the COB, it is short for Chip on board; these are the type of LEDs that come as high-powered chips mainly printed over the circuit board with optimal thermal management. It is commonly seen to be used in the case of applications like LED downlights and LED-based tracking lights. The MCOB stands for multiple chips on board LEDs, which are the multiple COB LEDs integrated to form a single chip. This technology is also seen to be used in the case of LED bulbs and tubes. In the case of MCCOB, it is short for multiple chips and cups on the board. These are commonly seen to be used in the case of high bay fixtures and for certain types of floodlights.
Based on the structure, LEDs can be divided into SMD, COB, MCOB, and MCCOB, the same way the LEDs are divided into three main categories based on their power. These are in the form of; Low-Power, Mid-Power, and High-Power categories. However, the power is counted mathematically by forwarding voltage and driving the current. However, in the case of different wholesale LED SMD suppliers, there are various different standards.
Advantages and Disadvantages of SMD and COB LEDs
Based on the various standards, different types of LEDs are found in the market. These are the LEDs that are available in various different sizes as well. There are multiple SMD LED chip sizes: 2835, 3535, 3030, 3014, 5050, and 5630. These are the sizes based on their dimensions, length,h, and width. These are the sizes that are as 3535 is 3.5 x 3.5mm, 3030 is 3.0 x 3.0mm, and 5050 is 5.0 x 5.0mm.
Advantages of the SMD LEDs
SMDs are more efficient than COBs. This is because of the fact that the producers of the source of light that is being produced have higher lumen per watt. This meant that with the lower wattage, more light was produced.
The SMDs are the products known to produce a wider beam of light spread over a greater area; this means that the lesser material is needed for the heat sink. This way, they are proven to be a lot more economical.
SMD lamps also produce a broad light ideal for lighting an area.
There are various different chips on the PCB that are made to make these SMDs. Thus, if any chips are broken over time, the other chips would continue to work the same way, designing a perfect circuit.
These are also known to be highly reliable as they show strong resistance against vibration and a low defect rate in the case of the solder joint points.
SMD LEDs are also famous because of the fact that they are less in terms of weight as they are relatively more minor in terms of size. Because of its size and weight, automation is easy to achieve, leading to improved production efficiency. This leads to the saving of materials, energy, equipment, manpower, time, and other resources as well.
These SMD LEDs are much more flexible in the case of lamp designs because of their small size. Its less weight makes it an option that is good for heat dissipation (less heatsink). The lamps are lower in weight; thus, they are suitable for safety and have tender properties. Thus, they are also considered safe from fire initiation as it provides acceptable protection against electric shock. Thus, it is usually preferred over the other types of LEDs.
Applications of SMD and COB LEDs
SMDs are seen to be one of the most common types of lighting that we get to see nowadays. They are seen to be used in various applications in the form of street lights, flood lights, high bay lights, canopy lights, and linear lights.
Whereas in the case of the COB LEDs, these are seen to be used in various applications that include COB street lighting, tracking light, downlight, spotlight, low bay light, and various other types of applications.
According to the applications mentioned, the applications scenarios are neither fixed nor limited. For instance, Both the COB and SMD can be used in street lighting and high bay light; however, the COB is commonly seen in downlights and tracking lights, and SMDs are commonly used for high bay lights and street lights.
